I tried a new restaurant today.  Matt and I hadn’t been on a date in awhile, so we ventured downtown and had dinner at Z’Tejas.  Let me tell you, it was yummy!  I didn’t really know what to expect; I thought I heard some people say they liked it, but I was looking forward to forming my own opinions.  We decided to splurge and get the appetizer (I know!)-I chose the nachos with pork, guac, black beans and cheese.  They were probably the best nachos I’ve ever eaten.  (Okay, so I was hungry.)

For my meal I ordered some orzo pasta, which I’ve never had before.  It was mixed with tomatoes, mushrooms, zuchinni, and onions.  The flavor was awesome!!!  I think there was some garlic in it, too, which I love.  I’d also consider myself a texture person, so the orzo was pretty fun for me to eat-this dinner was so good I saved some for lunch tomorrow!  I typically ignore leftovers…

Finally, I would like to point out that the cornbread at Z’Tejas is soooo much better than any cornbread I’ve eaten at any BBQ joint.  I’m not sure how they do it, but it rocked.  So, all in all, I’d say that I’d go back there.  You should go too.  Oh yeah, and did I mention that they have their cornbread recipe online?!?!  Check it out.

Hurricane Ike's path at 5:48pm

Hurricane Ike is coming to Texas.  I have never actually been in a hurricane and still won’t have been in one after this weekend.  Austin is not on the coast.  This does not, however, remove me from all of the hurricane’s effects.  Today, school was let out at noon-yes, that’s 12:00-almost 3 hours early!  Authorities decided that it was better for everyone to be off the roads so that people coming into town would have an easier time.  Good thinking, guys.

This is a short summary of my afternoon:

1.  Finished up a few things at school, then carted most of my classroom home, getting here about 1:30.

2.  Ate leftovers from last night for lunch (yummy pizza sandwich), and continued reading The Anybodies.

3.  Fell asleep on my bed for about 3 hours, getting the much-needed sleep I missed this week.

This was the first school closure for a hurricane since I’ve been in Austin, but there have been a couple closures in past Decembers when there was a thin piece of ice covering Austin roads, and everyone was crashing into each other.  I find it funny that Austin’s weather hardly compares with Nebraska’s when it comes to severity, but schools have been closed here more often than they did back when I was a kid.  Safety first, you know.

So yesterday I went to visit my good friend, Sarah.  It was alot of fun to see her and I especially enjoyed getting to see her new baby Brode!  He is going to break some hearts one day.  Anways, I had taken along my camera (which I normally don’t remember to do), but I forgot to take a picture!

I was almost to my house when I spotted THIS CRAZY CAR!  I came up to it from behind, and I thought, how is this car balancing on only two wheels?!!  I whipped out my camera without hitting anyone, and snapped a few pictures.  When I showed Matt, he said, “You did this while DRIVING?!?!!”  I think he was a little concerned…This was the best one:

only in Austin...and maybe Europe

As I passed the car I realized that it had one wheel in the front, kind of like a tricycle.  What a funny car!

Speaking of cars, we also snapped a shot of these two cars when we were on our Washington trip a month ago.  The first one was in British Columbia and is worth more than our house.  Yikes!

I love Austin because you’ll see things here that you won’t anywhere else!  It may not always be a good thing, but at least it makes it interesting to live here. 🙂
